Economic factors influence net carbon emissions of forest bioenergy expansion

چکیده
Abstract There is considerable concern that consuming forest biomass for energy will increase net carbon emissions from forests, which defined as debt. Using a market-based economic model, we test the effects of 51 demand pathways bioenergy on future stocks to assess likelihood incurring sustained debt lasting several decades. We show potential expansion, measured near-term decrease in sequestration relative baseline, occurs and persists only under specific set assumptions about accounting, markets, policies, demands. Finally, evaluate whether regulations restricting sourcing could influence scale and/or reduce time needed recover (payback period). similar absence direct imposing limits supply likely payback period but does not avoid initial

Carbon accounting of forest bioenergy
Via a detailed analysis and review of the currently available literature, this work aims at clarifying the phenomena, physical and mathematical, underpinning the methodologies and results in forest bioenergy carbon accounting. The large scale techno-economic models indicate that an increased forest stemwood removal for bioenergy purposes may cause either a decrease of the forest carbon stock (o...
متن کاملIndirect carbon dioxide emissions from producing bioenergy from forest harvest residues
Forest harvest residues are important raw materials for bioenergy in regions practicing forestry. Removing these residues from a harvest site reduces the carbon stock of the forest compared with conventional stem-only harvest because less litter in left on the site. The indirect carbon dioxide (CO2) emission from producing bioenergy occur when carbon in the logging residues is emitted into the ...
متن کاملIntegrating Forest Carbon Sequestration into a Cap-and-Trade Program to Reduce Net Carbon Emissions
Problem: Most research on planning to mitigate climate change has focused on reducing CO2 emissions from coal-fıred power plants or the transportation sector. The contribution of forests to lowering net CO2 emissions has largely been overlooked. U.S. forests already offset about one eighth of the nation's annual CO2 emissions and have the potential to offset more, all at a relatively low cost. ...
متن کاملEconomic and Environmental Factors Determining the Amount of Carbon Dioxide Emissions in the MENA Countries
Abstract: The gradual warming of the earth and its negative environmental and economic impacts contributed to pay attention to sustainable development considerably. Since climate change is a major cause of greenhouse gas emissions, including CO2, countries are seeking to prevent the rapid growth of emissions to reduce global climate change. Accordingly, and considering the importance of the sub...
متن کاملRegional carbon dioxide implications of forest bioenergy production
Policies are being developed worldwide to increase bioenergy production as a substitution for fossil fuel to mitigate fossil fuelderived carbon dioxide emissions, the main cause of anthropogenic global climate change4,5. However, the capacity for forest sector bioenergy production to offset carbon dioxide emissions is limited by fossil fuel emissions from this activity (harvest, transport, and ...
